PTI Election Symbol 2024 given to Candidates

In the upcoming general elections in Pakistan, electoral symbols hold significant importance within the democratic process. As the country prepares for the elections scheduled for next month, the streets of cities and towns are adorned with posters featuring party symbols displayed on utility poles and roadside walls.

The onset of campaigning by political parties is evident, with propaganda posters covering walls. However, there’s a notable absence of the symbol associated with what many consider to be the country’s most popular party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). This absence is a result of an unprecedented crackdown on the PTI and its leader, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently in jail. Consequently, the PTI has been prohibited from using its party symbol in the elections slated for February 8th.

Why Election Symbols Are So Important?

In Pakistan, the seemingly simple line drawings of electoral symbols carry significant weight. According to Malik, a journalist with GEO, approximately 40 percent of the country’s population lacks formal education. Voters who cannot read rely heavily on these symbols to identify their preferred party on the ballot. Malik noted that even those who can read may not be deeply engaged in the campaign process, but they are familiar with their party’s symbol.

She emphasized that electoral campaigns, including slogans and songs, are intricately woven around these symbols. For instance, an analysis conducted by a faculty member at Islamabad’s COMSATS University in 2020 revealed that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) used the slogan “Ballay ko diya kis nay sahara – Patel Para Patel Para” (translated to “Who supported the bat – Patel Para Patel Para”) to garner support from residents of Karachi’s Patel Para neighborhood.

Similarly, other political parties like Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N) and Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have crafted slogans and songs around their respective symbols. The PPP’s memorable anthem “Dilan teer bija” (translated from Balochi to “An arrow to your heart”) possibly alludes to the party’s arrow emblem.
